If we can make it okay with them, it becomes easier to be okay with ourselves. Getting back together is one way of resolving these feelings. That's why it's so common for people who are going through breakups to suffer low self-esteem, shame, guilt, and other negative self-directed emotions. When our erstwhile partners are angry or disappointed, it's hard not to think that there's something wrong with us. If they reject you, that's soul-crushing for a lot of people," said Comrie. "You chose to date them because you respect them, you value their opinion. "It's really common to want to prove 'no, he still really wants me' or 'see, I'm not that bad.'" In intimate relationships, how we see ourselves is strongly affected by how our partners see us. Helen Fisher likened the effects to the withdrawal symptoms from addictive substances, so it's not hard to see why people will do just about anything to make it stop, including going back to a partner that isn't good for them.Īccording to Comrie, the desire to redeem ourselves can be a strong force pulling people back towards their exes.

What could go wrong is that you bounce back and forth, just prolonging the difficult process of cutting ties. Anything can seem better than the misery of a break up. And even if you get past that, the 'single life' can be bad enough to make you nostalgic for worse times. Your wayward heart could lead you right back into the issues that sent you packing in the first place. Maybe you've both matured and are ready for the relationship you were always meant to have. Or maybe, those problems solved themselves. You know what split you up the first time and have a strategy for dealing with those challenges this time around.

After he showed up at my house We got back together and obviously it didn’t work long term but either way. He had no idea if i was happy going out on dates, or sitting at home. He had mentioned that it drove him wild that he literally had NO IDEA what I was doingg with my life. After about a month my ex literally showed up on my doorstep and we got back together. It was as if i fell off the face of the earth. A couple years ago me and my ex broke up and i left him on all my social media but i didn’t watch a story, like a pic, or acknowledge that he was there. I’m just curious what daddy gang thinks is more confusing, spiteful or hard to watch when you and an ex break up.
